  • HOW TO USE

How to Use a Fire Extinguisher

In an emergency, remember the simple  PASS  technique:

P – Pull  the safety pin to break the tamper seal.

A – Aim  the nozzle or hose at the base of the fire.

S – Squeeze  the handle to release the extinguishing agent.

S – Sweep  from side to side until the flames are out.

Always keep a clear escape route behind you and call  999  immediately. Fire extinguishers are only intended for  small, manageable fires  — if the fire grows or you feel unsafe, evacuate at once and wait for the fire service.

    Fire Extinguisher Maintenance

To make sure your fire extinguishers are always ready for use, they must be checked and serviced regularly:

    • Monthly Check:  Confirm the extinguisher is in its correct location, easy to see, undamaged, and that the pressure gauge is in the green.
    • Annual Service:  By law, a qualified fire technician must service each extinguisher once a year. This includes weighing, inspecting, and certifying the unit.
    • 5-Year Extended Service:  Most extinguishers require a full discharge, internal inspection, and refill or replacement every 5 years.
    • 10-Year Test (CO₂ units):  Carbon dioxide extinguishers require a hydraulic pressure test and full service every 10 years.

Regular maintenance ensures compliance with fire safety regulations and gives peace of mind that your extinguisher will perform when it matters most.
